Wrangler Claims They Didn't Pull Ads Because Of Brett Favre Scandal

Brett Favre Wrangler Ad

A Wrangler spokesperson tells CNBC that they did not withdraw their usual Brett Favre campaign because of any scandal. They say they never meant to show them in the first place.

The spokesman claims this was part of the strategy all along and that the company had previously planned to "run fewer ads from mid-October through mid-November, to save money for the holiday season."

Oh, they still ran ads during NFL telecasts this weekend. They just chose to run ads featuring a NASCAR driver, instead of their most well-known and (previously) marketable spokesmodel, who just happens to be a professional football player. Seems like an odd strategy, doesn't it?

Deadspin's Brett Favre story

As part of his ongoing investigation into the crotch shots Brett Favre sent Jets employee Jenn Sterger, NFL VP of Security Milt Ahlerich has requested a meeting with Deadspin editor A.J. Daulerio.

Ahlerich met with Favre on Tuesday. Favre refused to comment about the meeting in a press conference today, while Jenn Sterger has refused to cooperate with the NFL at all. She reportedly hired lawyers to represent her in the Favre matter.

Daulerio is awaiting consultation on the matter and is likely to participate. Although he won't have much to say beyond what's been published on Deadspin.

Deanna Favre, wife of Brett, will appear on ABC's "Good Morning America," and Fox News Channel's "Fox and Friends" on Thursday morning, USA Today reports.

Though she's probably appearing for the benefit of breast cancer awareness—she's a survivor herself, and the NFL has been pushing Breast Cancer Awareness Month all October—Favre has to be expecting an uncomfortable round of questioning regarding Jenn Sterger and her husband's publicly aired genitals.

Brett Favre, Traitor

Brett Favre admitted leaving voicemail messages on Jenn Sterger's phone, but denied sending her any explicit photos when he met with the NFL on Tuesday, Fox Sports reports. A Deadspin article earlier this month attached Favre to both the voicemails and the pictures.

In the meantime, the NFL's investigation is still ongoing. They're awaiting Jenn Sterger's cooperation. She has yet to decide whether she'll meet with league officials.

The New York Post reports that Jenn Sterger has finally met today with NFL investigators looking into text messages and voicemails sent to her by former Jets QB Brett Favre.

Sterger, her lawyer, and her manager met with the head of NFL security at an "undisclosed location" in Manhattan.

Recent speculation was that the investigation would soon wither and die without the cooperation of Sterger, who would be key to any attempt to discipline Favre or the Jets for sexual harassment.

This should re-ignite talk of a suspension or retirement for the Vikings quarterback.

The NFL Is Going To Learn How To Treat Women Right

The NFL has partnered with Northeastern University's Sport In Society to develop a workplace-conduct program for the league and its 32 teams.

The program will be tailored to specifically address each club's shortcomings when it comes to "social responsibility.)

We suspect this is one more step the NFL is taking to distance itself from the workplace controversy that stemmed from the Ines Sainz and Jenn Sterger incidents.

Following the Sainz situation, Jets owner Woody Johnson underwrote a league-wide training program with the Association for Women in Sports Media that would develop a set of best practices for handling media in the workplace.

Hopefully, these programs mean the NFL's off-the-field issues are a thing of the past. After all, we just want to focus on football…or concussions.

Agents For Brett Favre, Jenn Sterger Trade Accusations About Payoffs To Keep Her Quiet

Deadspin's Brett Favre story

The manager for former Jets employee Jenn Sterger says that Brett Favre's agent inquired about paying her to silence the story of Favre's naughty cellphone pictures.

Favre's agent, however, says it was Sterger's camp that made "overtures" about a payoff.

Sterger's manager Phil Reese, says he called sports agent Bus Cook in October, to tell him that Deadspin was about publish the story of Favre's inappropriate texts and voice mails that were sent to his client.

Reese says Cook asked him "if there was a specific figure in mind that could make this go away."

But in a statement to the AP, Cook said Sterger and Reese were the ones who made "numerous overtures to me ... at least 6 between the two of them."

What both sides agree on is that no settlement has been made or will be made anytime soon. The NFL has interviewed both them, but has yet to make a ruling on their investigation.

Will Brett Favre End His Streak So The NFL Doesn't Have To?

$

Brett Favre

Brett Favre was too sore to throw at practice yesterday, leading to the 297th week of speculation that Favre might be too injured to play in his 298th consecutive game.

Forgive us if we're not showing enough concern, but we've heard this record before. Favre can and will play on Sunday.

Unless ... Favre is looking for a way to "suspend" himself, before the NFL can do it for him.

Sources say the NFL's investigation into Farve's possible sexual harassment of Jenn Sterger is over. It's in the commissioner's hands now. All we need is a decision.

So where is it?

If this were any other player, Roger Goodell would have sent down his punishment weeks ago. But Favre is not any other player. He's played more consecutive games than any other football player ever and done it at one of the most injury (and poor performance) prone positions in all of sport. No commissioner would want to go down as the one who ended that over a naughty cell phone photo.

But if Favre were to finally admit that his 40-year-old body has taken too much — that he needs a rest, that he can't even lift his arm above his head to make a simple screen pass — the streak would end and no one would judge him. "On his terms."

Then Goodell could suspend him two more games, he could play the regular-season finale against Detroit, and ride off into the sunset for a much-deserved retirement.

Or he could insist on getting to 300 straight games and the NFL's P.R. nightmare could continue forever and ever. If we know Brett Favre —and we think we do by now — we'd tell you to go ahead and pencil him into your lineup card this week.

Today Is The Last Day Jenn Sterger Can File A Sexual Harassment Suit Against Brett Favre

$

Jenn Sterger

Under New Jersey's two-year statute of limitations on sexual harassment claims, today is the last day Jenn Sterger can file such a lawsuit against the New York Jets or Brett Favre.

That would eliminate her strongest legal claim against Favre for sending her voicemails and nude crotch shots.

According to Pro Football Talk, Sterger's last contact with Favre came on the last day of the Jets' 2008 season, or December 28, 2008.

The NFL has continued to put off its decision on the Favre-Sterger scandal. Certainly, the league didn't want to rain on Favre's last hurrah (for now) in the NFL, but delaying until this date puts the ball in Sterger's court and allows the league to make a decision with knowledge of the legal circumstances.

Also, by delaying it so long, the league may not have to punish Favre at all. He is unlikely to be recovered from his concussion before Sunday, when the Vikings play their final game of the year.

NFL Will Fine Favre But Won't Suspend Him For Crotch Shot Incident*

Brett Favre

Update: Favre's fine is believed to be $50,000. He reportedly admitted to the voicemails, but denied sending the nude photographs. The NFL couldn't prove otherwise.

Still, that's a pretty weak punishment.

Earlier: The NFL is expected to fine Brett Favre either today or tomorrow, but won't suspend him, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer.

That decision will come more than 80 days after Deadspin published the crotch shots and voicemails Favre left former Jets' employee Jenn Sterger.

The League can afford to take it easy on Favre, now that Sterger's deadline for filing a sexual harassment suit appears to have expired.

Still, if this report turns out to be true, the fine better be a hefty one. Too many people already believe the NFL is delaying a decision to protect Favre and compromising its integrity.

As soon as the league announces the cost of the fine, you can find it on the Sports Page

Here's Why It's OK That The NFL Only Fined Brett Favre $50,000 Over The Naked Crotch Shots

$
0
0

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell

The knee-jerk reaction to the NFL's paltry $50,000 punishment for Brett Favre is outrage. Players get fined $75,000 for tackles that are slightly out of line, $25,000 for tweeting when they shouldn't, but Favre only gets $50,000 for sexual harassment.

However, Favre wasn't fined for sexual harassment; he was fined because he didn't cooperate with a league investigation. Favre isn't guilty of sexual harassment, at least not under any reasonable burden of proof. According to a league statement, despite hiring forensic experts, they were unable to definitively link the crotch shots Deadspin published with Favre. All that's left are some flirtatious – but certainly not salacious – voicemails.

While everyone is so eager to take down Favre, we can't argue with the NFL abiding by America's belief in presuming innocence until guilt is proven. It's much easier to take the NFL to task for delaying the decision so long.

But as tempting as the theories of Favre favoritism are, the NFL probably would have liked to handle this situation as quickly as possible. PR 101 mandates that companies move forward from scandalous incidents as quickly as possible. But the NFL lingered for 83 days, while the story took on a life of its own.

That's because the NFL had to conduct a thorough investigation from scratch. Deadspin offered no starting point. It simply got the tip and paid for details and evidence. While that satisfies their own standard of proof, it doesn't do so in a legal setting.

To satisfy that greater burden of proof, Commissioner Roger Goodell met with Sterger, Favre, and anyone else who would cooperate. And that wasn't as easy as it could have been. Sterger initially balked at a meeting, and Deadspin editor A.J. Daulerio wouldn't offer any detail beyond what was published. Between Jets officials, Sterger, Favre, lawyers, forensics experts, and others, a lot of testimony went into an already complicated decision.

Granted, 83 days is too long. But Goodell undoubtedly wanted to see whether Sterger filed a lawsuit – it's no coincidence that the punishment was announced a day after New Jersey's two year statute of limitations passed– and it's difficult to blame him for that. He had trouble finding proof despite nearly three months of searching, and he wanted to see whether the courts would have better luck. You have to tread delicately with sexual harassment allegations.

The NFL handled this situation terribly, but there's little else Goodell could have done. He knows the league already has a bad reputation with women, and he probably wanted to exact a hefty punishment to put his foot down once and for all. But without proof, it's irresponsible to act on that urge.

JENN STERGER: Sexts, Startups, And Single Life

$

sterger jenn

Jenn Sterger's name probably rings a bell.

She's had quite the year since Deadspin revealed a scandalous secret last October. NFL quarterback Brett Favre was sexting her X-rated photos of himself and and leaving unwelcome voice messages.

The scandal created a ripple effect, both for Sterger and the world. Now MTV runs PSA's discouraging teens from sending naughty phone photos; Anthony Weiner tweets himself in the buff. For Sterger, her career exploded.

Now she's hosting a number of TV and web episodes; she's even dabbling in the NYC startup scene.

Yesterday we spoke with Sterger. She gave us her honest take on:

  • The Brett Favre scandal
  • Her relationship status
  • Her stint in startups
  • Her advice to Anthony Weiner's sext victims.
  • The secret gig she's been working on

Jenn StergerBusiness Insider (BI): Most people know you from the October Brett Favre scandal, but you actually had an entertainment career before that. What was your first break?

Jenn Sterger (JS): People always call [my career] Pamela Anderson-esque.  I don’t know why
that is, because I don’t have a sex tape.

BI: That’s a good thing.

JS: I was
discovered in the stands in a 12 second clip [as a college senior at a Florida State football game in 2005]. Announcer Brett Musberger voiced over and said, "1,500 red-blooded men just decided to apply to Florida State."

That became a viral recruiting video almost. [The press] pulled the pictures
out of my Facebook and everyone was trying to hunt me down for the
next couple of days. It just kind of snowballed from there.

I shot
Maxim and Playboy within the next month and a half. It was crazy from there on out.

I wasn’t planning on going the modeling route. But it just kind
of presented itself, and I had always wanted to be in the
entertainment industry. I had never really had any luck with
auditions or castings. Even meeting agencies they’d be like, “You
don’t have the right look.”  I would just
 be crushed.

So when I got an opportunity I thought, This may be my only shot, I might as well run with it. And
 that's where I am now.

quote jenn sterger

BI: How did you end up working for The Jets?

JS:  I started writing a weekly column for Sports Illustrated and that led me to do a lot of public appearances.   I got
invited to games at The Meadowlands.  The Jets and
their fans always enjoyed having me there, so [the team] created a
role for me. I would come in, entertain fans before
games, and interview celebrities. And that’s how I ended up in New York actually...I'm still living in Brooklyn.

I was born in Miami, raised in Tampa, and then went to
school in Talahassee.  So I gradually made my way north. I
came up here for that [Jets] job and, like most women, I came up here for
love as well. I thought it was going to be all “Sex and the City,”
and it was definitely not.

BI: So you moved for love -- have you found it?

JS: No, I definitely didn't find [love] yet. I'm still looking for it. I think Carrie Bradshaw and those girls are such filthy liars! I am looking for love, just like every girl is up here. Trying to balance that and a career is quite a feat.

quote jenn sterger

BI: There are a lot of girls feeling the way you felt back in October now that the Anthony Weiner situation has come to light. What's your advice to them?

JS: Weiner in general is overplayed, in every sense and phrase of the word. I've been asked about it a couple times, and I really can't comment on how other people handle their situations because every situation, though it may seem similar to the general public, is different.  You can't really advise people on how to handle scandal when it arises. You just have to go with your gut and go with the people who are advising you at the time.

BI: You waited two years before saying anything about Brett Favre's sexts. Why did you wait so long?

JS: I waited because I didn't have any plans for it to come out in the first place.  It happened two years ago, and I was kinda forced out of hiding regarding the situation. Believe me, if I never had to address it publicly, I'd be much happier.

Jenn StergerBI: But like you said, everything happens for a reason. You definitely have a lot of opportunities now and I'm sure getting your name out there a little bit helped...

JS: Yeah, but trust me, there's a difference between good press and bad press. I don't care what people tell you. A lot of it's been making sure people get to know the real me and get to know my side of the story.

BI: What have you been working on lately?

I am now with Fuel TV and it's been an absolute blast. I shot the Hometown Throwdown with them in March in Wisconsin. Fuel is very focused on action sports like snowboarding skateboarding, and dirt bike riding. My program is about average Joes proving they’re the toughest guys in
town. We’re talking about doughnut makers, peanut farmers, butchers and parole officers.

The second episode airs [tonight]. We’re waiting to hear whether or
not there will be more of them. It’s been very well-received so far.

[As for other projects] I have a couple of NDAs signed. I'll also be be
working with the website, BroBible. BroBible is a really cool men's lifestyle website. They're doing an entire relaunch this weekend -- a whole new look. My video segment will be part of the relaunch.

quote jenn sterger

JS cont'd: I love BroBible's vibe. I’ve always been one of the guys
and this site kind of allows me to play out that side of my
personality.  Like most men, I have a great appreciation for female beauty, so the weekly segment I'm doing for them is their "Hotties Index." Each week I'll break down their top five choices of hotties and weigh in on them.

BI: There's a rumor that you've been working with a New York startup, YouAre.TV.

JS: YouAre.tv came about because I was good friends with
the guys over there. They brought me to the studio a couple of
times because I love doing web casts.  I
told them I’d help them beta test the software.
It’s been a lot of fun.
I haven’t really signed an agreement with them.  I’m not necessarily
working with them, it was just a project that I enjoyed working on.

Jenn StergerBI: Have you known the founders for a while?

JS: Yeah, we’ve been buds for a while.  I meet people all the time through Facebook
and through different connections I have out there. That’s how I met [founder Josh Weinstein].

Josh approached me a while ago and told me about this cool
project he’d been working on. I told him, “When you guys are ready to launch, I’d love to help you
out." I gave them my feedback as far as how the software was working for me as a host, and noted the things I thought they could improve.

[i would sign on as an actual YouAre.TV host] if I had time.

It all depends on scheduling.

BI: Where do you want your career to go? TV? Modeling? Writing?

JS: I’m kind of a jack of all trades. Modeling is the lowest
thing on the totem poll.  It’s not something I enjoy doing
anymore. If it’s for promotional purposes for something I'm
working on, great. I’m a trooper. I’ll do pretty much anything they
ask me to as far as promotional stuff goes because I like backing the
projects I work on.  I support them. But it’s not the thing I
 want to do the most.

Plus whoever heard of a 5”2 model, realistically? I’m more of a flip-flops and
 Converse kind of girl.

I’ve been working on a lot of different things in the comedic
realm - some scripted, some non-scripted. A lot of improv. I'm still figuring this whole entertainment industry. Sports will always be part of what I do, but it's not necessarily my main focus any more.

quote jenn sterger

BI: Sports does seem to be a common thread. Do you play any or just enjoy watching them?

JS: The only sport I'm actually good at is bowling. I think it's because it's played in air conditioning, and I'm such a baby about that because I'm from Florida where it was 90 degrees year round.

Other than that I just love sports. My dad's always been very bitter that he never had a son, so I think he raised me like a boy. I love cars, I love sports, football is my first love, baseball keeps me entertained until football rolls around again, I'm loving the NBA Finals right now, and like most of the country, I've become a Dallas fan.

I don't want to see the Heat win.  I'm a huge fan of the underdog. I'm Tampa sports all around. I love the Bucs, I love the Rays -- those are my go-to teams. If I have to have a basketball team, the Magic are my choice because they're a quick hour-drive away. I've never lost those Tampa Bay sports roots.

BI: How have you been able to come back from scandal and succeed?

JS: I think the thing that I had the most difficulty with in the fall was that I am a really goofy, ridiculous, inappropriate person. Having to be quiet and having to not have a voice killed me.

I enjoy interacting with people on the web and enjoy interacting with "fans" or friends or followers, or whatever you call them. Not being able to do that for six months was brutal. It killed me. That's why I'm so grateful now that my piece is out there. People can google it, listen to it and it lives on on the internet. Hopefully it stays on the internet so I don't have to address it every time I open my mouth to give an interview.

10 Surprising Facts About Jenn Sterger, The Woman Brett Favre Sexted

$

jenn sterger

Yesterday we interviewed Jenn Sterger, the former New York Jets sideline personality that quarterback Brett Favre once sexted.

We learned some interesting things about the TV personality who turned a sexting scandal into a career.

If you don't have time to read the full interview, here are some of the more interesting highlights.

1. Modeling agencies constantly rejected her in high school

Sterger, who's modeled for magazines like Maxim and Playboy, has done well turning her looks into a career. But her looks didn't always take her places.

"I had always wanted to be in the
entertainment industry," she told us. "In high school my mom used to take me to auditions and castings. I never really had any luck with
[them].

"[When I'd meet with] agencies they’d be like, “You
don’t have the right look.”  I would just
 be crushed.

2. She was discovered as a college senior at an FSU vs Miami football game

After constant rejection in high school, Sterger made her break thanks to sportscaster Brett Musberger.

"I was
discovered in the stands in a 12 second clip [as a college senior at a Florida State football game in 2005]," she tells us. "Announcer Brett Musberger voiced over and said, "1,500 red-blooded men just decided to apply to Florida State."

"That became a viral recruiting video almost. [The press] pulled the pictures
out of my Facebook and everyone was trying to hunt me down for the
next couple of days. It just kind of snowballed from there."

3. She's still single

Sterger moved to NYC for both her career and love.

"I gradually made my way north. I
came up here for that [Jets] job and, like most women, I came up here for
love as well," she tells us. "I thought it was going to be all “Sex and the City,”
and it was definitely not.

"I definitely haven't found love yet. I'm still looking for it. I think Carrie Bradshaw and those girls are such filthy liars! I am looking for love, just like every girl is up here. Trying to balance that and a career is quite a feat."

This Isn't The First Time Brent Musburger And ESPN Gushed Over A Pretty Girl

$
0
0

When ESPN cameras landed on Katherine Webb during the BCS Championship game, broadcaster Brent Musburger immediately gushed about her beauty.

He said things like "you quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women" and "if you're a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with pop."

Recognizing how awkward it was for a 73-year-old man to go on and on about a 23-year-old girl's good looks, ESPN apologized for Musburger's comments saying the announcer "went too far."

Seven years ago, though, ESPN and Musburger essentially did the same thing, minus the apology.

That's Brent Musburger saying "1,500 red-blooded Americans just decided to apply to Florida State."

He's talking about the Florida State Cowgirls and Jenn Sterger, who would go on to pose in Maxim and Playboy magazines. Sterger was also supposedly the recipient of Brett Favre nude texts while she was the New York Jets sideline reporter.

Jenn Sterger was catapulted into fame in 2005 for the same reasons Katherine Webb is now – because of ESPN and Brent Musburger.

Webb, who is Miss Alabama and the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron, has since become an Internet star of sorts as her Twitter following has exploded as a result of the attention paid to her by ESPN and Musburger.

She even received some (failed) direct messages from athletes looking to steal her away from A.J. McCarron, which she didn't find amusing.

The message from Musburger stayed the same – that boys are motivated by pretty girls – so it's pretty strange to see ESPN apologize for something they've done before.
